Elopement vs. Traditional Wedding: Which Is Right for You?

4/27/2026

When it comes to tying the knot, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Some couples dream of a grand celebration with hundreds of guests, while others crave an intimate moment shared with just a few loved ones—or even just each other. At Sunny Days Events & Rentals, we’ve helped couples plan both styles of weddings across Southeast Alaska, and we know each path has its own magic.
So how do you decide between an elopement and a traditional wedding? Let’s break it down.

🌲 What Is an Elopement?
An elopement is a small, intimate ceremony—often with just the couple, an officiant, and a few witnesses. It’s about simplicity, spontaneity, and focusing on the moment rather than the production.
Perfect for couples who:
  • Want privacy and intimacy
  • Prefer nature-based or adventurous settings
  • Are working with a smaller budget
  • Want to avoid the stress of large-scale planning

🎉 What Is a Traditional Wedding?
A traditional wedding typically includes a ceremony and reception with a larger guest list, formal attire, structured timelines, and multiple vendors. It’s a celebration of love shared with family and friends.
Perfect for couples who:
  • Want to celebrate with their community
  • Enjoy planning and personalization
  • Have cultural or religious traditions to honor
  • Want a full day of festivities and memories

🧭 Key Differences to Consider
Guest Count
Elopements: 0–10 guests
Traditional Weddings: 50–200+ guests
Budget
Elopements: Lower overall cost
Traditional Weddings: Higher cost, more vendors
Planning Timeline
Elopements: Can be planned in weeks
Traditional Weddings: Often take 6–12 months
Venue Needs
Elopements: Flexible, outdoor-friendly
Traditional Weddings: Requires larger venues and rentals
Logistics
Elopements: Minimal setup, fewer moving parts
Traditional Weddings: Coordinated timelines, vendor management, guest accommodations

Planning Events Around Cruise Ship Schedules

4/13/2026

Juneau is one of Alaska’s most popular cruise ports, welcoming thousands of visitors each day during the summer season. If you're planning an elopement or event in town—especially one tied to a cruise itinerary—timing is everything.
At Sunny Days Events, we specialize in helping couples and clients navigate the rhythm of cruise ship arrivals, local traffic, and vendor availability. Whether you're stepping off the ship for a few hours or hosting a full-day celebration, here’s how to plan around the cruise calendar with ease.

📅 Know the Cruise Ship Calendar
Juneau’s cruise season runs from late April through early October, with peak traffic in June, July, and August. On busy days, five or more ships may dock, bringing over 10,000 visitors into town.
We recommend checking the Juneau Cruise Ship Calendar to:
  • Avoid high-traffic days for better privacy and vendor availability
  • Time your event to avoid congestion downtown
  • Coordinate transportation and ceremony timing with ship schedules

We monitor the calendar closely and help you choose dates that work best for your vision.

💍 Eloping While on a Cruise? Here’s What to Know
Many couples choose to elope during their Alaska cruise—and Juneau is a favorite stop for good reason. But cruise-based elopements require precision and local support.
Key tips:
  • Choose a location close to port or with fast transport options (Skater’s Cabin, Mount Roberts Tram, Auke Rec)
  • Allow buffer time for disembarkation, transportation, and unexpected delays
  • Keep your ceremony short and sweet—30–60 minutes is ideal
  • Hire a local planner (that’s us!) to handle permits, vendors, and timing

We’ve helped hundreds of cruise couples elope in Juneau—without missing the boat.

🚁 Want Glacier Views? Plan Ahead
If you're dreaming of a glacier elopement via helicopter, timing is even more critical. Flights are weather-dependent and require coordination with your ship’s arrival and departure.
We work with trusted helitour partners to:
  • Schedule flights that fit your cruise itinerary
  • Monitor weather and adjust plans as needed
  • Ensure you’re back on board with time to spare

Glacier elopements are breathtaking—and totally doable with the right team.

🧭 Vendor Availability & Logistics
Cruise days affect more than traffic—they impact vendor schedules, too. Photographers, florists, and officiants may be booked solid on high-volume days.
We help you:
  • Secure vendors early
  • Choose off-peak times for better service
  • Coordinate all logistics so you don’t have to juggle details from the ship

💬 Final Thought
Planning an event around cruise ship schedules doesn’t have to be stressful. With local insight, smart timing, and a little flexibility, you can create a celebration that’s intimate, beautiful, and perfectly timed.
At Sunny Days Events, we specialize in cruise-based elopements and short-window celebrations. Whether you’re here for a few hours or a few days, we’ll help you make the most of your time—and your love story.

Big Impact, Small Setup: Styling Elopements on the Cruise Ship Docks

Picture
In Juneau, love doesn’t wait for a ballroom. For couples arriving by cruise ship or seeking a spontaneous ceremony with a stunning backdrop, the docks offer a uniquely Alaskan way to say “I do.” At Sunny Days Events, we’ve helped dozens of couples tie the knot right on the waterfront—with nothing more than a personalized script, a bouquet, and a whole lot of heart.
Here’s how we make dockside elopements simple, meaningful, and unforgettable.

🧭 Local Knowledge Is Everything
We don’t bring arches, chairs, or elaborate setups—we bring years of local experience. Born and raised in Juneau, we know the rhythms of the waterfront, the quirks of the terrain, and the timing of the tides. That matters when your ceremony is five minutes long and the seaplanes are roaring overhead.

One big tip: Time your ceremony between seaplane flights or choose a spot away from the plane floats for a quieter moment.

🚢 Know Your Dock
Juneau has several cruise ship docks, and knowing where your ship is docking is essential. We’ll coordinate with you in advance to make sure your officiant—usually Jessie—is waiting at the right spot.

Jessie will assist with signing your marriage license and return it to the Department of Vital Statistics after the ceremony, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

💐 Bouquets & Keepsakes
We can arrange for Jessie to bring a bouquet, but most couples choose silk or synthetic flowers so they can bring them home as a keepsake. It’s a sweet, practical touch that travels well and lasts forever.

📋 Permits & Public Spaces
The cruise ship docks are public property, and any formal setup (like arches or chairs) would require a permit from Docks & Harbors. For most elopements, that’s not necessary—these ceremonies are short, sweet, and beautifully simple.

If you’re dreaming of something more elaborate, we’re happy to guide you through the permitting process.

💬 Final Thought
Dockside elopements are proof that love doesn’t need a stage—it just needs a moment. With local insight, a trusted officiant, and a view that speaks for itself, your ceremony can be intimate, effortless, and unforgettable.
At Sunny Days Events, we specialize in making small setups feel grand—especially in the places that make Southeast Alaska so magical.

Amanda Manacio of Amanda Manacio Photograhy is a wonderfully caring and artistic photographer that takes her job seriously. She prefers to work with smaller life moments. So, if you are wanting her for your 200+ person wedding, you might have to know someone or do some major groveling. However, she is perfect for engagement, boudoir, pregnancy or Alaskan Elopement.

She is not afraid to get down and dirty, or wet and cold, to get the shot.

NorthStar Trekking

Imagine traveling all the way to the last frontier for your dream elopement wedding on top of one of the picturesque glaciers in Juneau, Alaska.  You want to make you get to that glacier!  NorthStar Trekking has been one of my favorite, of then several great, helicopter companies in Juneau.  The office staff is always there to help and answer questions.  The ground crew makes sure you have the gear (boots and jackets are available if needed) and educate you how the helicopters work.  The pilots love what they do and do their utmost to alleviate any nerves your may have about traveling on their quite expensive magic carpet rides!  I thoroughly enjoy traveling with this company.
