Behind the Scenes: Commissioning Ceremony for the CG Icebreaker Storis

When the U.S. Coast Guard commissioned the icebreaker Storis, it was a moment of pride and history for Southeast Alaska. At Sunny Days Events, we were honored to support the occasion by providing essential rentals that helped the ceremony come together—despite last-minute changes, wild weather, and logistical curveballs.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we contributed to this high-profile event.


🤝 Our Role: Rentals, Reliability, and Rapid Response
We weren’t the event coordinators—but we were the rental backbone. Our team worked closely with:

• CBJ Docks & Harbors
• The U.S. Coast Guard
• The Navy League of the United States

As the date shifted multiple times in the week leading up to the ceremony, other vendors couldn’t accommodate the changes. We stepped in to fill those gaps—providing tables and chair solutions on short notice.


Our flexibility and local presence made it possible to pivot quickly and keep the event on track.


🎪 The Setup: Night Before, Rain or Shine
We installed the tents the evening before the ceremony, working around weather, terrain, and tight timelines. The stage was added later by another team, and we didn’t receive final layout details—like sidewall placement or chair configuration—until the morning of the event.


That meant adjusting everything on-site, in real time, with crews already arriving and sideways rain in full force.




🌧️ Weather, Wind & Last-Minute Layouts
Juneau delivered its signature sideways rain, and the original layout had to pivot fast:

• The stage didn’t fit as expected, requiring a reconfiguration of the tent interior
• Sidewalls were placed based on wind direction and visibility needs
• Chair placement was finalized just hours before guests arrived

Our crew adapted quickly, securing everything and ensuring the space was functional, dignified, and dry.




🤝 Filling Gaps & Supporting the Team
As the event date shifted multiple times in the week leading up to the ceremony, other rental providers couldn’t accommodate the changes. We stepped in to fill those gaps—sourcing additional items and adjusting our crew’s availability multiple times to meet the evolving needs.


We weren’t the coordinators, but we were the steady hands behind the gear—and proud to support CBJ Docks & Harbors, the Coast Guard, and the Navy League.
